Germany shoe market shifts as sandal sales decline
The German footwear market is experiencing a shift in consumer preferences, characterized by a decline in traditional sandal sales and a rise in sneaker popularity. According to a report by IFH Köln and BBE Handelsberatung, revenue from classic sandals fell to 548 million euros last year, down from 621 million euros in 2019—a nearly 12 percent decrease that significantly outpaces the overall shoe market's 5.5 percent decline.
Market experts suggest that consumers are increasingly prioritizing comfort and versatility, opting for sneakers that can be worn year-round rather than seasonal footwear like sandals. This trend toward a ‘smart casual’ style is driving demand for sneakers, retro-inspired chunky models, and more feminine silhouettes such as slim ankle boots and loafers.
Other emerging fashion trends for the upcoming season include a return to 1990s and 2000s aesthetics, featuring items like retro sneakers, Mary Jane-inspired ‘sneakerinas,’ and wide-leg alternatives such as trousers with side stripes.
