Forest fires in Europe primarily driven by human activity
Data from the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE) indicates that only about three percent of forest fires in Germany have natural causes, such as lightning. In cases where the cause is determined, human factors account for 95 percent of incidents, including negligence, arson, and activities like smoking or grilling. Alexander Lührig of Allianz Agrarversicherung notes that while climate change does not ignite fires, it creates highly flammable conditions by drying out vegetation and deadwood left by bark beetle infestations.
In Belgium, the largest forest fire since 1911 occurred in the High Fens (Hohes Venn). Investigations suggest the blaze may have been triggered by mowing activities conducted by a private contractor on behalf of the Walloon Nature and Forests Administration (DNF). Walloon Prime Minister Adrien Dolimont acknowledged that performing mowing operations on that day was likely not a wise decision, though official investigations are ongoing to determine responsibility.
Forest fires also pose significant threats to wildlife. The Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) reports that small, less mobile species like insects, amphibians, and hedgehogs face much higher mortality rates compared to larger animals. Additionally, the phenomenon of “zombie fires”—smoldering underground in peat or organic soil—remains a danger as they can reignite long after initial suppression efforts.
