Germany, France, and Poland meet to discuss EU foreign policy reform

Foreign ministers from Germany, France, and Poland are meeting within the Weimar Triangle framework to coordinate responses to international challenges, including hybrid threats, Middle East stability, and EU enlargement. The discussions follow recent EU ministerial meetings in Ireland regarding the reform of EU foreign policy.

A central point of contention is the proposed restructuring of the European External Action Service (EEAS). There are plans to transfer many foreign policy competencies and staff to the European Commission, which would increase the influence of the EU foreign policy chief.

Kaja Kallas has expressed opposition to these reforms, arguing against duplicating tasks within the Commission. She stated that the current institutional structure has broad support among member states and emphasized her role as a “link between the member states and the Commission.” Kallas also noted that her effectiveness is currently limited by the need to subordinate her role to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
