Germany funds QuantumDiamonds to scale innovative chip defect‑detection technology
The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWE), together with the Bavarian state government, approved funding for QuantumDiamonds GmbH, a deep‑tech spin‑off from the Technical University of Munich. The support aims to scale the company’s precision measurement system that uses nitrogen‑vacancy centres in synthetic diamonds to detect magnetic fields and locate semiconductor defects at the nanometre level within minutes.
The funding, part of the European Chips Act programme, is intended to strengthen Germany’s role in the global semiconductor value chain and reduce reliance on foreign chip‑testing technologies. The EU Commission’s state‑aid approval process, started in 2025, is expected to be completed later this year, enabling the project to move toward larger‑scale production.
QuantumDiamonds joins other German sites such as GlobalFoundries in Dresden and X‑Fab in Erfurt in receiving co‑financing under the same scheme, highlighting the country’s push for technological sovereignty in key chip‑related technologies.
