Germany funeral industry sees record apprenticeship numbers

The funeral industry in Germany is experiencing a significant boom in vocational training. According to data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of apprentices in dual training programs for funeral specialists reached a record high of 900 by the end of 2025. This represents more than a doubling of trainees compared to 2015, when there were 430 apprentices.

Demographic shifts, specifically an aging population, are driving this growth. Deaths in Germany rose to approximately 1 million in 2025, a 9% increase over the previous decade. This rising demand is reflected in the industry's economic scale, with approximately 32,000 people employed across roughly 4,200 companies, generating a turnover of 2.37 billion euros in 2024.

A notable shift in workforce demographics shows that women now make up 61% of apprentices, up from 46% in 2015.

Economic trends also indicate rising costs for consumers. In 2025, prices for funeral services and cemetery fees increased by 3.2%, outpacing the general consumer price inflation of 2.2%. Meanwhile, the cost of burial items such as coffins, urns, and tombstones rose by 1.9%.
