Germany gas storage levels reach 57.63 percent amid winter preparations
As of late September 2026, natural gas storage levels in Germany stand at approximately 57.63 percent. This figure is notably lower than both previous years and the European average of 71.16 percent.
Despite these lower levels, industry experts, including VNG managing director Stephan Haupt, suggest that the gas supply remains secure for a normal winter. The risk of a supply crisis is considered low unless multiple factors coincide, such as prolonged extreme cold, further import failures, or technical infrastructure disruptions.
While supply is expected to hold, consumers are warned of potential price increases due to supply chain fluctuations. Germany's energy landscape has shifted significantly since the cessation of Russian gas deliveries in 2022, with the country now relying more on liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, new international contracts, and increased European network integration to manage peak demand.
