American Heart Association: Up to Five Cups of Coffee Safe

The American Heart Association (AHA) released a scientific statement in the journal *Circulation* that concludes daily caffeine intake of up to 400 mg – roughly three to five 8‑ounce cups of black coffee – is safe for most healthy adults. The review links moderate coffee consumption to lower rates of heart failure, coronary heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes, provided the coffee is plain and without added sugars, syrups or high‑fat creamers.

The AHA cautions that highly caffeinated energy drinks and energy‑shot products can raise blood pressure and trigger arrhythmias, and therefore should be avoided. It also notes that unfiltered coffee varieties (French‑press, Turkish, boiled) contain cafestol, which may increase LDL cholesterol, while filtered coffee does not.

The recommendation has been reported across numerous outlets in the Dominican Republic, Spain, Germany, Belarus, Italy, Poland, Colombia and other regions, all echoing the same limits and warning about additives and energy drinks. People with hypertension or other cardiovascular conditions are advised to monitor their intake and discuss coffee use with a physician.
