Germany healthcare costs reach record 528.5 billion euros
Germany's healthcare expenditures reached a record 528.5 billion euros in 2024, marking a 7.6 percent increase from the previous year. According to the Federal Statistical Office, per capita costs averaged 6,330 euros. A significant gender gap exists, with women incurring 6,960 euros in costs—22.5 percent more than men's 5,680 euros—largely due to higher life expectancy and pregnancy-related expenses.
Demographic shifts are driving costs, as individuals over 65 account for over half of all healthcare spending, totaling 284.3 billion euros. Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death and the highest cost driver at 69.4 billion euros. However, deaths from cardiovascular diseases fell by 1.5 percent in 2025 to 334,100, continuing a downward trend since 2022. Cancer was the second leading cause of death in 2025, with 228,800 fatalities.
To address financial pressures, the federal cabinet has approved increases to the contribution assessment ceilings. For health insurance, the monthly limit will rise from 5,812.50 to 6,375 euros. Additionally, the pension insurance ceiling will increase from 8,450 to 8,850 euros. These adjustments aim to alleviate pressure on statutory health insurance funds caused by demographic changes.
