Germany healthcare: Geriatric care and medical transport updates
In Germany, medical transport vouchers (Transportschein) allow patients with limited mobility to have travel costs covered by health insurance. These vouchers, officially known as 'Verordnung einer Krankenbeförderung' or 'Muster 4', must be prescribed by a doctor. The selection of transport—whether by taxi, public transit, or specialized medical vehicles—depends on the patient's health status and mobility needs.
In the Ilm-Kreis region, political efforts are underway to improve geriatric medical care. The SPD-Ilm-Kreis, supported by other local parties, is advocating for the allocation of the 'Geriatrie' service group to the Ilmenau location of the Ilm-Kreis-Kliniken. This initiative aims to provide holistic, local medical treatment for elderly patients to help maintain their independence and quality of life.
