Germany heart failure rates linked to socioeconomic status

A report from the 'Gesundheitsatlas Deutschland', published by the Scientific Institute of the AOK (WIdO), reveals that more than 3 million people in Germany were affected by heart failure in 2024. The data shows a significant correlation between socioeconomic disadvantage and the prevalence of the condition.

In Germany's most socioeconomically disadvantaged regions, the prevalence of heart failure is 6.8 percent, compared to 4.4 percent in more affluent areas. This disparity remains evident even when accounting for age and gender. The report also highlights links between heart failure and preventable risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.

Heart failure, often referred to as heart weakness, is a common cardiovascular issue typically resulting from other conditions like coronary heart disease and hypertension. The findings emphasize the necessity of targeted prevention measures and improved living conditions to mitigate cardiovascular risks.
