Germany heat protection: Senior support via hotlines and apps
In response to rising temperatures in Germany, community initiatives and digital tools are being used to protect vulnerable populations, particularly seniors, from heat-related health risks.
In Freiburg, the Freiburg Hausnotruf-Dienst operates a free heat telephone hotline in cooperation with the city. Volunteers call more than 50 seniors at least once a week to check on their well-being, provide social interaction, and offer personalized advice on managing high temperatures, such as hydration reminders tailored to specific medical conditions.
Additionally, digital applications are being utilized to assist with heat protection. These include apps that calculate personalized water needs based on age and weight, as well as weather warning services like the German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst) app. However, consumer advocates warn that users should be cautious regarding data privacy and the potential sharing of sensitive health information by third-party applications.
