Germany heat deaths: RKI estimates 12,500 fatalities
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) estimates that approximately 12,500 people in Germany died due to extreme heat between April 6 and August 2. A significant portion of these deaths occurred among the elderly, with 6,270 people older than 65 and 3,110 older than 74. The highest concentration of these estimated deaths was recorded during the week of June 22 to June 28.
Uwe Janssens, managing director of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive and Emergency Medicine (DIVI), argues that the RKI figures likely underestimate the true impact by several thousand. He notes that heat-related deaths are often recorded as organ failure on death certificates rather than heatstroke, as extreme temperatures exacerbate existing conditions like cardiovascular or kidney disease. Janssens has called for a binding national heat protection plan and increased funding for hospital climate control, noting that many emergency rooms lack air conditioning.
Additionally, the union Verdi reported alarming conditions in nursing homes, where temperatures reached as high as 45 degrees Celsius. A survey of 321 caregivers indicated that extreme heat poses life-threatening risks to residents, with reported instances of circulatory collapse, dehydration, and suspected heat-related deaths.
