The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) estimates that approximately 12,500 people in Germany have died due to extreme heat between April 6 and August 2. The majority of these deaths occurred during a heatwave in late June. Most victims were elderly, with over 6,270 deaths among those older than 65 and 3,110 among those older than 74.

Medical experts, including Uwe Janssens of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI), argue that official figures likely underestimate the true toll by several thousand. This discrepancy is attributed to the fact that heat-related deaths are often recorded as organ failure on death certificates rather than heatstroke. Janssens highlighted that elderly individuals are particularly vulnerable because they often lose the sensation of thirst, leading to fatal dehydration.

Additionally, the union Verdi reported alarming conditions in nursing homes, where temperatures reached up to 45 degrees Celsius. According to Verdi, such heat is life-threatening for residents and unbearable for staff. The union is calling for an immediate heat protection program and structural improvements in care facilities to protect vulnerable populations.
