The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) estimates that 16,300 people in Germany died due to heat-related causes between April 6 and August 23, 2026. This figure follows a summer of record-breaking temperatures, with many nights failing to cool down sufficiently.

A significant portion of these fatalities occurred during specific heatwaves. Approximately 9,600 deaths were attributed to the extreme heat during the week of June 22 to June 28. Another 4,500 deaths were recorded during the period from late July to mid-August.

The RKI notes that these figures are conservative estimates. The methodology involves comparing mortality data from the Federal Statistical Office with temperature data from 52 weather stations of the German Weather Service (DWD) to identify excess mortality. Most deaths occurred in individuals with pre-existing conditions, such as cardiovascular or kidney diseases, which were exacerbated by the heat stress.
