Germany analysis says fossil heating systems double costs of heat pumps and insulation savings often overstated

A study by the non‑profit consultancy co2online compared the 20‑year operating costs of various heating systems for a typical 130 m² single‑family home. An air‑water heat pump is estimated to cost €24,490, a ground‑source heat pump €22,040, while a gas boiler would cost around €55,570 and an oil boiler about €67,180 – more than twice the expense of a heat pump. The analysis also examined the impact of the planned “Bio‑Treppe” in the Building Modernisation Act, which will require gradual blending of renewable gases such as biomethane, hydrogen or bio‑oil into fossil fuels. According to the calculations, a gas boiler running on biomethane would rise to €65,130 over the same period, and on hydrogen to €66,520, further widening the cost gap.

Consumer‑protection officials warned that marketing claims of “up to 50 % energy savings” from façade insulation are unreliable. The Savings depend on building type, existing condition, heating system, and user behaviour. The Verbraucherzentrale Schleswig‑Holstein advises homeowners to calculate potential savings using specific U‑value improvements, heating demand and façade area rather than relying on generic percentages.
