Germany heatwave deaths reach 12,000 according to RKI

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has revised its estimates regarding heat-related fatalities in Germany, reporting approximately 12,000 heat-related deaths so far this year. A significant spike occurred during a single extreme heatwave from June 22 to June 28, during which roughly 9,600 deaths were recorded—a figure higher than any single year since 2016.

Medical professionals report that emergency responders are frequently finding dehydrated elderly patients with pre-existing conditions. While regional differences exist, Baden-Württemberg and Saarland have reported high numbers of fatalities.

Despite the rising mortality rates, there is growing criticism regarding the government's response. While officials have held conferences regarding low water levels and shipping disruptions, critics note the absence of a dedicated heat crisis summit. The Federal Medical Association and approximately 80 other European health organizations are calling on the EU to implement a coordinated European heat protection plan. Locally, responsibility for adaptation measures like increasing green spaces and water fountains lies with states and municipalities, though many face financial constraints in implementation.
