Germany: High fines for vehicle impoundment and illegal knife possession

In Germany, vehicle owners face significant financial penalties for violating specific traffic and weapon laws. One major risk involves the “Red Dot,” a sticker placed by police on vehicles that are not roadworthy or are illegally parked on public property. If the owner fails to remove the vehicle within the specified timeframe, the police may impound, auction, or scrap the vehicle. The owner is responsible for all associated costs, including processing, towing, and storage fees, which can reach up to 100,000 euros if the auction proceeds do not cover the expenses.

Additionally, carrying certain knives in a vehicle can lead to fines of up to 10,000 euros. Under the Weapons Act, items such as one-handed knives or fixed-blade knives exceeding 12 centimeters in length are prohibited unless the driver can demonstrate a legitimate interest. Simply placing these items in a glove compartment is insufficient, as they must be stored in a locked container to ensure they are not immediately accessible.
