Germany holds Holocaust remembrance events in Hamburg and Weimar

In Hamburg, a public rally is scheduled for 15 July 2026 at Altonaer Straße 38 to mark the July 1942 deportation of more than 1,500 Jews from the former Schanzenstraße school to Theresienstadt. Organisers cite the story of Claus Borchardt, a former pupil who later perished in Auschwitz and Dachau, and stress the need to defend democratic values against hate.

In Weimar, an ecumenical service will be held on 18 July at the Buchenwald memorial site. The ceremony commemorates the murder of Protestant pastor Paul Schneider in 1939 and Catholic priest Otto Neururer, killed 86 years earlier for providing baptismal instruction to a fellow inmate. The service is led by Pfarrers Peter Gümbel and Timo Gothe, with music by the Kreuzkirche brass choir and a sermon by Regional Bishop Friederike Spengler.
