Germany hosts National Cancer Prevention Week focusing on early detection

The National Cancer Prevention Week is taking place from September 21 to 27, 2026, in Germany. Organized by the German Cancer Aid, the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), and the German Cancer Society, this year's campaign focuses on the importance of early detection under the motto ‘Lass mal checken’ (Let’s check).

Medical experts and officials, including Federal Health Minister Carsten Linnemann, are urging the public to utilize statutory screening programs for breast, colorectal, cervical, skin, and prostate cancer. In Germany, approximately 520,000 people are diagnosed with cancer annually, and experts suggest that roughly 40 percent of these cases could be prevented through lifestyle changes and proactive screening.

To support awareness, the campaign includes digital lecture series such as ‘Lunch & Learn’ and specific sessions on prostate cancer detection. Additionally, the organizing bodies are providing information modules for businesses to assist employees. Amid ongoing discussions regarding healthcare spending, the organizations have cautioned against cutting funds for early detection programs, noting that the effectiveness of these initiatives depends heavily on public participation.
