Germany faces rising housing costs and social welfare pressures

Germany is facing significant economic pressures related to housing and the rising cost of living. In Hamburg, the Senate is facing criticism for planning a record budget that includes cuts to education, university places, and inclusion services. Simultaneously, proposed federal changes to housing benefits (Wohngeld) could reduce the calculation basis for single-person households by up to 101 euros due to changes in rent levels and heating cost components.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) has warned that apprentices are struggling with high costs for rent, fuel, and groceries. The DGB argues that political austerity measures and precarious employment conditions are increasing the risk of poverty among young people in training.
