Germany housing allowance rules for fixed-term workers and pensioners
In Germany, the housing allowance (Wohngeld) serves as a state subsidy for rent or costs for self-occupied properties, aimed at supporting low-income households. According to the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building, eligibility is tied to specific income requirements.
For individuals with fixed-term employment contracts, such arrangements do not disqualify one from receiving benefits. However, the Department of Social Affairs and Sports of the City of Augsburg notes that the duration of the allowance is typically limited to the end date of the employment contract.
For pensioners, the amount of the subsidy depends on the gross cold rent, total household income, and the local rent level. For a single person receiving a monthly pension of approximately 1,000 euros, calculations suggest a monthly subsidy ranging from 200 to over 400 euros. The calculation accounts for specific components, including a heating cost relief and a climate component, as well as standardized deductions for taxes and health insurance.
