Germany housing associations demand reforms to address shortages

German housing associations and municipal representatives are calling for systemic reforms to address housing shortages and rising rents. The Deutsche Städte- und Gemeindebund (DStGB) has urged federal and state governments to develop a comprehensive concept that focuses on making rural areas more attractive. According to the DStGB, there are currently 1.9 million vacant apartments in rural regions, with over 700,000 expected to be ready for occupancy within three months.

To alleviate pressure on metropolitan areas, the DStGB suggests improving infrastructure, such as reactivating rail lines, enhancing healthcare, and expanding public transport in structurally weak regions. They also recommend utilizing funds from the special infrastructure budget to ensure equal living conditions across the country.

In Baden-Württemberg, the Association of Baden-Württemberg Housing and Real Estate Companies (vbw) is demanding faster action to lower construction costs. The vbw advocates for the implementation of the 'BW-Standard' to simplify building processes and reduce expenses. Additionally, the association highlighted significant delays in the state housing subsidy program, noting that some companies must wait over a year for funding approvals, which increases project costs and hinders the creation of affordable housing.
