Germany faces regional rail funding crisis and housing supply challenges

German regional transport ministers are warning of potential service cuts and rising ticket prices due to a significant increase in track access charges. Following a European Court of Justice ruling that overturned previous fee caps, DB InfraGo plans to raise fees by 7.7 percent in 2027, with further increases expected in 2028. Bavarian Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter has urged the federal government to provide financial compensation to prevent regional connections from being canceled.

Separately, a study by the Sparda-Banken association and the Institute of the German Economy suggests that the aging baby boomer generation will not resolve Germany’s housing shortage. While many older homeowners may eventually sell or inherit properties, a significant regional imbalance exists: supply is often concentrated in rural areas, whereas demand remains highest in metropolitan centers.

In other developments, the German government is facing criticism over plans to reduce subsidies for electric buses from 403 million to 130 million euros by 2027. Additionally, discussions continue regarding fuel relief measures for businesses following the expiration of the ‘tank discount’ program.
