Germany: How to set up a P-Konto to protect funds from seizure

In Germany, debtors facing account seizures can protect their legal minimum subsistence level by converting their standard checking account into a Pfändungsschutzkonto, or P-Konto. This measure ensures that funds required for basic necessities such as food, clothing, and housing remain accessible.

Experts advise that debtors act immediately upon account seizure to prevent the failure of standing orders, which could lead to critical issues like eviction. To set up a P-Konto, individuals must first ensure they are using an individual account rather than a joint account. Debt counselors recommend that couples separate their finances and dissolve joint accounts before applying, as only individual accounts are eligible for conversion. This separation prevents a partner from being inadvertently affected by the other's debts.

Applications for a P-Konto can be made online, by telephone, or in person at a bank. Consumer advocates note that banks should not use long-term in-person appointment requirements to unnecessarily delay the process.
