Germany business confidence rises as manufacturing recovers
The Ifo Business Climate Index for Germany rose to 90.2 points in October, marking the sixth consecutive month of improvement. This increase, surpassing market expectations of 90 points, represents the highest level in three years.
The manufacturing sector acted as the primary driver of this recovery. For the first time in over three years, both current business assessments and future expectations in the manufacturing industry returned to positive territory. This improvement is supported by an increase in new orders, leading many industrial firms to plan production expansions.
In contrast, the service sector experienced a decline in business climate due to lower satisfaction with current business activities, although future expectations remained somewhat positive. The trade sector showed a mixed performance, with wholesale showing more strength than retail. The construction sector also saw an uptick in sentiment, with companies reporting higher satisfaction and improved future outlooks.
Despite the rising confidence, economic risks persist, including geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and potential energy price volatility. Additionally, while export expectations have reached their highest levels since the start of the war in Ukraine—driven largely by a significant rebound in the automotive industry—long-term stability remains subject to broader macroeconomic uncertainties.
