Waymo to launch robotaxi service in Munich by 2027
Waymo, an Alphabet subsidiary, has announced plans to expand its autonomous vehicle operations into the European Union, selecting Munich, Germany, as its initial launch site. The company aims to begin providing a regular, fully driverless robotaxi service to the public by the end of 2027.
In the immediate term, Waymo will begin testing its electric Jaguar I-PACE fleet on Munich streets within the coming weeks. These initial phases will involve vehicles operated by trained safety drivers to map local road networks, including areas such as Maxvorstadt and Au-Haidhausen, and to evaluate how the technology handles specific local conditions like urban intersections and weather.
This move marks a significant step in Waymo’s international expansion, following previous efforts in cities like Tokyo and London. The company has already established local corporate entities in Germany, the Netherlands, France, and Switzerland to support its broader European growth strategy. While Germany provides a legal framework for Level 4 autonomy, Waymo still requires specific testing approvals from the Federal Motor Transport Authority to proceed with its commercial rollout.
