Germany implements digital vehicle registration via i-Kfz-App

Germany has implemented the digital vehicle registration (DFZ) through the i-Kfz-App, allowing users to carry their Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I on smartphones. Unlike a simple photograph, the digital document is generated directly from official registry data, making it a valid official document for traffic inspections.

Since November 2025, private holders have been able to use the service, and as of March 2026, companies and organizations can also integrate digital vehicle documents via QR codes. The German government reported over 1.5 million users by March 2026. While the digital version is a convenient, free, and voluntary option, the physical paper document remains valid and is not replaced by the digital version.
