Germany implements hospital restructuring and projects physician growth

Germany is undergoing structural changes in its healthcare landscape. In Rhineland-Palatinate, hospitals in Bingen, Kirn, and Hermeskeil are scheduled to transition into ‘Regiokliniken’ starting in 2027. These facilities will serve as cross-sectoral care centers bridging inpatient and outpatient treatment, focusing on local emergency care. Health Minister Clemens Hoch indicated that additional locations, including Frankenthal and Bad Dürkheim, are under discussion.

On a national level, the German government projects a significant increase in the hospital physician workforce. Data from 2024 shows 217,724 doctors working in hospitals, with a rise expected to reach approximately 231,000 by 2035. While specialties such as ophthalmology, urology, and internal medicine are expected to see growth, pediatric and adolescent medicine may see a slight decline. The increase in personnel is driven by the rising demand for healthcare in an aging society.
