Germany implements local initiatives to support elderly mobility

Local initiatives in Germany are addressing the mobility needs of the elderly through infrastructure and volunteerism. In Gotha, the Baugesellschaft Gotha (BBG) has implemented a solution for tenants using small electric vehicles and mobility aids. The company has installed multifunctional storage boxes at building entrances in the Clara-Zetkin-Straße residential area. Originally intended for strollers, these lockable metal boxes now serve as mini-garages for electric mobility vehicles and walkers, providing secure storage and charging access for seniors.

In the Samtgemeinde Spelle region, a new volunteer-based driving service is being established to support senior citizens. The project aims to provide transportation for medical appointments, shopping, and social visits to combat isolation and maintain independence for those no longer able to drive themselves. Organizers are currently seeking volunteer drivers to participate in the initiative.
