Germany implements mandatory driver's license exchange
Germany is undergoing a mandatory transition to new, EU-standardized driver's licenses to ensure uniform security and prevent forgery through centralized database registration. This process affects millions of holders of older paper and credit-card style licenses.
In the Main-Kinzig-Kreis region, a mobile exchange unit is providing local services to facilitate this transition. An upcoming session is scheduled for October 28 in Bruchköbel at the Stadthaus, where residents can exchange licenses via pre-booked appointments. Due to high demand, additional indoor space at the Stadthaus will be utilized.
According to the ADAC, failure to exchange licenses by the specified deadlines can result in administrative fines and potential issues when driving abroad. The exchange must be handled by the licensing authority at the individual's current place of residence. Requirements for the application include a valid ID, a biometric photo, and the current license. While the physical card is valid for 15 years, the driving permission itself remains valid indefinitely.
