Germany implements mandatory driver's license exchange deadlines
Germany is phasing out old paper and early EU card driver's licenses in favor of new, standardized, and forgery-proof EU documents. The transition aims to improve security through centralized database registration.
Deadlines for the exchange depend on the document's issuance year and the holder's birth year. For paper licenses issued before December 31, 1998, the holder's birth year determines the deadline. For older EU card licenses, the next major deadline is January 19, 2027, covering documents issued between 2002 and 2004. A special rule applies to individuals born before 1953, who have until January 19, 2033, to complete the exchange.
Failure to comply with the exchange deadline is considered an administrative offense, potentially resulting in a 10 Euro fine and difficulties when driving abroad. However, the expiration of the physical document does not mean the loss of the driving privilege itself; the underlying license remains valid. The exchange process must be completed at the driver's current local licensing authority, costing approximately 25 Euros and requiring a biometric photo and valid identification.
