Germany implements Mütterrente III pension reform

The German government has implemented the ‘Mütterrente III’ as part of the ‘Rentenpaket 2025’ to equalize pension benefits for childcare periods. The reform aims to benefit approximately 10 million retirees by increasing the recognized childcare periods for children born before 1992.

Previously, childcare periods for children born before 1992 were capped at 30 months, whereas children born from 1992 onwards were credited up to 36 months. Starting January 1, 2027, the cap for all children will be raised to 36 months, adding six months of credit per child.

While the legal changes take effect in 2027, actual payments are expected to begin in 2028 due to the technical requirements of the Deutsche Rentenversicherung to recalculate millions of insurance accounts. Retirees already receiving pensions before 2028 will receive retroactive back payments for the 2027 period. For a standard pension with a full additional half-credit point, the retroactive payment for the year 2027 is estimated to be at least 255.12 euros gross, though this amount may be higher due to scheduled pension adjustments.
