Germany implements pension reforms including Mütterrente III

Germany is implementing significant pension reforms through the ‘Rentenpaket 2025’, which includes the ‘Mütterrente III’ initiative. This reform aims to improve pension benefits for parents whose children were born before 1992 by granting an additional half pension point per child. While the new regulations take effect on January 1, 2027, actual payouts are expected to begin in 2028 due to the technical requirements of updating over ten million insurance accounts. Retroactive payments will be made to those who retired before 2028.

Additionally, the ‘Grundrente’ (basic pension) continues to support long-term contributors with low incomes. For married couples, the Deutsche Rentenversicherung considers combined monthly income; for 2026, a joint income of up to 2,327 euros remains exempt from reductions. The Federal Social Court recently upheld the legality of including a spouse's income in these calculations.

Experts note that while the Mütterrente III will benefit approximately 10 million retirees, some women may not see a net gain. For those receiving ‘Grundsicherung im Alter’ (basic old-age security), increased pension payments may be offset by reductions in social assistance if they do not meet the 33-year contribution threshold.
