Germany implements new 30 km/h speed limits for school and pedestrian safety

Local authorities in Germany are implementing new 30 km/h speed limits to enhance safety for students and pedestrians in specific residential and high-traffic areas.

In the Helmstedt district, new speed limits have been ordered for Hauptstraße in Rennau and Hasenwinkelstraße in Rottorf. These zones are specifically located near bus stops used by approximately 20 students each. The restrictions apply on weekdays from 6:00 to 9:00, excluding Saturdays. Officials noted that the decision was driven by the lack of secure crossing options, such as traffic lights or pedestrian crossings, in these high-frequency school routes.

In another municipality, local district committee members approved continuous 30 km/h zones on Scheinerstraße. The measures target areas near playgrounds and pedestrian crossings, with limits active daily from 7:00 to 20:00. The decision aims to harmonize traffic speeds and close existing gaps in speed-restricted zones near childcare facilities.
