Germany implements new laws to accelerate housing and infrastructure construction
New German federal legislation aimed at accelerating construction and securing housing, colloquially known as the ‘Bauturbo’ law, is showing early results in regional implementation. In Stuttgart, Mayor Dominik Krause reported that the regulations have already facilitated the approval of approximately 2,100 new apartments by allowing projects to bypass lengthy development plan procedures when they align with municipal urban goals.
Beyond residential housing, the federal Infrastructure Future Act is also influencing large-scale projects such as bridge construction. In Baden-Württemberg, officials are discussing how to integrate these federal accelerations with state road laws. For infrastructure projects like the Neckar Bridge, planners are navigating heritage protection requirements and technical challenges, such as designing arch structures that do not impede shipping traffic. Authorities are also exploring functional tendering processes to encourage more creative and efficient engineering solutions.
