Germany implements new speed limits to improve road safety
Local authorities in Germany are implementing measures to address speeding and improve road safety in residential areas.
In the Hamburg district of Finkenwerder, the district assembly has approved a traffic concept to introduce a 30 km/h speed limit on a 3.3-kilometer stretch of road starting in early 2027. The measure, which will serve as a one-year trial, aims to reduce noise, decrease through-traffic, and increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The area experiences high traffic volume, including approximately 9,100 daily vehicles related to Airbus plant and industrial park logistics.
In the Diepholz district, specifically in Bahrenborstel, authorities are relocating a bus stop due to drivers ignoring existing 30 km/h zones. The speeding on the Wietensholz road has created safety risks for pedestrians, school children, and residents near residential areas and sports fields. The district has committed to conducting speed measurements to address the issue.
