Germany implements new VDE-AR-N 4100 electrical standards

New technical regulations under VDE-AR-N 4100 have come into effect as of April 1, 2026, governing the connection and operation of customer systems to low-voltage networks in Germany. The updated standard introduces unified requirements for transformer and meter installations, which are becoming increasingly necessary in residential buildings due to rising power demands from heat pumps, photovoltaic systems, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Specifically, transformer measurements are now required for high current loads exceeding 44 A continuous or 63 A intermittent operation. The new rules also introduce changes to meter installations, such as the option for distribution fields in certain meter locations and the mandatory inclusion of a main switch in 3-point meter locations to enhance safety and allow for all-pole disconnection from the grid.
