Germany implements new wolf management and herd protection measures
As wolf populations increase in Germany, efforts to protect livestock are evolving through new legislative measures and practical demonstrations. In North Rhine-Westphalia, veterinarian Barbara Seibert has raised concerns regarding new hunting regulations. While the rules aim to allow faster intervention against problematic wolves, Seibert questions the practical ability of authorities to definitively identify a specific individual wolf responsible for livestock attacks before taking lethal action.
To address the need for physical deterrents, a new 2,500-square-meter demonstration facility for herd protection has opened in the Palatinate region near Münchweiler an der Alsenz. Established by the Bezirksverband Pfalz and the Lynx and Wolf Coordination Center (Kluwo), the site showcases various tools including electrified fences, gates, and chain curtains. Julian Sandrini, head of Kluwo, describes the site as a "market of possibilities" intended to help farmers choose appropriate solutions based on terrain and animal type. However, experts warn that absolute protection is unattainable, as wolves are capable of digging, swimming, and climbing obstacles.
