Germany expands anti-drone security after airport and military site incidents
Germany is significantly expanding its anti-drone security measures following a series of aerial incidents. This follows the discovery of an explosive-laden drone near Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport, a critical logistics hub for NATO and the German military.
Shortly after the Leipzig incident, two drones were detected over the Mechernich military facility, a site used for storing and maintaining US-made Patriot air defense system components. German authorities are investigating these events as potential hybrid attacks involving a foreign power.
In response, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced that the Federal Police anti-drone unit will be expanded to 300 specialists and its operational bases will increase from four to eight. The government also plans to invest in advanced radar and radio frequency jamming technology to protect critical infrastructure and transport hubs.
