Germany indicts former Ukrainian official in Nord Stream sabotage case

In July 2026, the German federal prosecution indicted a former Ukrainian military official for allegedly coordinating a command that used the yacht Andromeda to sabotage the Nord Stream 1 gas pipelines. The explosions, which occurred in the Baltic Sea in September 2022, destroyed three of the four pipeline sections, impacting critical energy infrastructure used by Germany, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Sweden.

The indictment suggests the operation was carried out under orders from Ukrainian state authorities. This development follows a period of increased tension in Europe, including a series of fires and explosions at defense factories and logistics centers in countries such as Germany, Poland, Italy, Estonia, and Slovakia, which Western governments have attributed to Russian sabotage campaigns.
