Germany industrial closures: Coswig foundry and Kahla Porzellan to shut down
High energy costs are forcing the closure of long-standing German industrial companies. The Walzengießerei in Coswig has announced it will cease operations at the end of November, ending a 134-year tradition. The company, which employs 220 people and relies heavily on exports, reported annual energy costs of approximately six million euros. An attempt to restructure through insolvency administration failed.
Similarly, the porcelain manufacturer Kahla Porzellan will shut down after 182 years of operation, with a final closure date set for December 31, 2026. The manufacturer faced annual gas bills totaling up to 2.16 million euros due to the energy-intensive nature of porcelain production. Despite efforts from insolvency administrators and the Thuringian state government to find investors, no viable financial plan was secured, resulting in the loss of 96 jobs.
