United States inflation rises to 3.7% in September
U.S. inflation accelerated in September, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rising 3.7% annually, exceeding market expectations. This increase was primarily driven by energy costs, as gasoline prices surged by 9.1% during the month, accounting for more than half of the overall monthly rise.
Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy components, rose 0.3% monthly and reached 2.6% on an annual basis. The uptick in prices, particularly in the energy sector, has been linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, specifically regarding the conflict in Iran and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
These economic indicators have heightened expectations regarding the Federal Reserve's monetary policy. Following the data release, market analysts noted an increased probability of a potential interest rate hike during the Fed's upcoming meeting in late October. The rising cost of living also presents significant political implications ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
