Germany initiates AI-powered LFP battery production project

An experimental programme called KiBa-Pro has been launched in Germany to transform the manufacturing of lithium‑iron‑phosphate (LFP) battery cells using artificial intelligence. The project, funded with €2.4 million by the German government, is coordinated by EAS Batteries together with RWTH Aachen, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Batalyse and Omron.

Sensors and data‑acquisition systems will collect real‑time information on materials, processes and quality along the production line. AI models will analyse millions of data points to identify correlations between production parameters and final cell performance, enabling virtual simulations of process changes before they are implemented. The aim is to cut waste, speed up development, improve cell lifespan and increase overall yield.

The initiative also highlights broader AI uses in battery research, such as discovering new chemistries and enhancing vehicle battery‑management systems.
