Germany intensifies border controls, leading to Swiss rejections

Germany has increased border controls at its external borders since September 2024, which has led to frequent instances of individuals being refused entry and sent back to Switzerland. These incidents often involve travelers caught using fraudulent identification or stolen documents during spot checks.

While the Schengen Agreement typically allows for the removal of systematic passport controls to facilitate travel, member states maintain the right to conduct temporary, sample-based checks for security purposes. Germany has extended these border controls until March 2027, a move that has faced criticism from the European Union.
