Leipzig/Halle Airport security breached by explosive drones

A major security incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany has highlighted vulnerabilities in national drone defense. An explosive-laden drone entered the airspace near the runway, leading to a total suspension of operations at the major cargo hub. During the incident, a second drone collided with a DHL cargo aircraft while it was performing holding maneuvers.

German authorities are investigating the origin and technical capabilities of the devices. Security experts have noted that current sensor networks are insufficient for detecting low-flying, slow-moving drones. The incident has prompted calls for increased investment in drone defense and closer cooperation between federal and state authorities. Interior Minister Jan Redmann emphasized that the security situation for critical infrastructure has intensified, noting that Berlin Brandenburg Airport also requires enhanced protection due to its status as a government airport.
