Germany introduces Automatic Safety Alert for DAB+ digital radios

A new disaster warning technology called Automatic Safety Alert (ASA) is being introduced to the DAB+ digital radio network in Germany. Designed to complement existing warning systems like sirens, mobile apps, and Cell Broadcast, ASA provides an additional layer of security that remains functional even if mobile networks or internet connections fail.

ASA-compatible radios can receive official emergency alerts from the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) even when the device is switched off or in standby mode. To ensure regional accuracy, users must enter a specific 12-digit location code into their device, which can be retrieved via a dedicated website by entering their address.

The nationwide rollout is scheduled to coincide with the national warning day on September 10, 2026. This serves as an opportunity for citizens to test their ASA-certified devices, which include everything from standard kitchen radios to hand-crank emergency models.
