Germany detains two Belarusians for suspected sabotage plots
German authorities have detained two Belarusian nationals, aged 39 and 50, on suspicion of planning sabotage attacks in the Nuremberg area. The Munich General Prosecutor's Office stated the suspects allegedly intended to use accelerants to set fire to critical infrastructure or a building to endanger the security of the Federal Republic of Germany. The investigation suggests the men were acting on behalf of a foreign government or organization in exchange for payment.
The suspects have been in pretrial detention since October 7. They are also linked to an investigation in Romania regarding an arson attack on an industrial park in Brasov on September 14, which targeted a facility housing a defense company. Romanian authorities have requested the extradition of the two men, as well as a Ukrainian national currently detained in Poland, in connection with the Brasov incident.
Authorities in several European countries have noted an increase in suspected Russian-linked sabotage and espionage activities targeting military, industrial, and critical infrastructure sites.
