Germany investigates suspected sabotage of electrical grid infrastructure

Germany is facing a series of suspected sabotage attempts targeting its electrical grid and critical infrastructure. Recent incidents include suspected attacks on substations in Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia, specifically near Bergheim and Jänschwalde. In Dormagen, a suspicious object, described by some reports as a homemade rocket launcher with timers and copper wire, was discovered by a passerby near a substation.

Authorities are investigating potential links between these events. In one instance, a man from Gevelsberg reportedly sent letters claiming responsibility, citing a fight against fossil fuels as his motive. German officials, including Siemens Energy CEO Christian Bruch, have warned that the threat to critical infrastructure is increasing, noting that Germany is particularly exposed due to its role as a transit country.

In response, the Bavarian government has announced plans for new legislation to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure, including allowing private operators to deploy drone defense measures. Additionally, the Austrian energy provider Salzburg AG has increased security measures following the incidents in Germany. Security experts also warn that sabotage attempts may increase ahead of upcoming state elections.
