Germany invests in innovative elderly care and assisted living

German states are increasing investments in innovative elderly care models to address demographic shifts and the rising number of people requiring assistance.

In Baden-Württemberg, the state and long-term care insurance have launched the ‘OrtsNahePflegeBW’ program. An initial 14.3 million euros is being allocated to six pilot projects in locations including Überlingen, Mannheim, Tübingen, and the districts of Lörrach and Tuttlingen. This is part of a larger 31 million euro commitment intended to fund innovative local care concepts through 2029, aiming to allow residents to remain in their communities longer.

In Bavaria, the Ministry of Health is expanding support for alternative living arrangements through the ‘PflegesoNah’ program. Recent funding includes 1.44 million euros for two outpatient assisted living communities in Munich, which will create 24 new care places. With the number of people in need of care in Bavaria projected to reach approximately 980,000 by 2050, the state has mobilized roughly 410 million euros since 2020 to support over 8,870 care places, focusing on bridging the gap between home care and full-time nursing facilities.
