Germany invests in rapid expansion of electric vehicle charging stations

Baden‑Württemberg announced that a consortium of Regioladen+, the Thüga Group and Lichtblick has received a contract to build a publicly accessible fast‑charging network for battery‑electric trucks at 14 locations. Each site must provide at least four charging points and a total capacity of 1,200 kW, with construction scheduled over the next two years.

Across Germany, registrations of electric cars surged by 41 % in April 2026, reaching 64,350 new vehicles. This growth has led to roughly ten cars per public charger, causing congestion and blocked spots, especially in city centres and shopping areas. Experts say digital parking‑management systems that track real‑time usage can help alleviate the pressure.

The city of Hanau approved two new fast‑charging parks under the federal "Deutschlandnetz" programme. Each park will host four DC chargers delivering up to 400 kW, enabling up to eight vehicles to charge simultaneously.
