Germany issues health warnings over water contamination

Health authorities in Germany have issued warnings regarding microbiological contamination in both river water and drinking water in separate regions.

In the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm, the health department reported microbiological loads in the Kyll, Nims, Prüm, Sauer, and Our rivers following sampling on August 19 and 20, 2026. While July tests showed no issues, officials now advise against swimming, wading, or any direct contact with these waters, particularly for children, to avoid potential health complaints. Routine testing for the season has concluded, and officials expect conditions to stabilize with changing weather.

In the Bodenseekreis region, Stadtwerk am See and the health department have issued a boil water advisory for the Bonndorf district of Überlingen due to microbial contamination in the drinking water. Residents are instructed to bring water to a rolling boil and let it cool for at least ten minutes before using it for drinking, food preparation, brushing teeth, or medical purposes. The contamination cause remains unknown, and the Walpertsweiler district is not affected.
